i’ve wanted to write this down for a while now, but things have been completely insane. a few weeks ago i made one of the hardest decisions of my life (so far) and accepted an invitation to serve as a volunteer in the peace corps.

choosing between my amazing (and secure) job and the uncertainty of the PC was obviously difficult, but i think the reason it took me so long to make a decision was because i was scared. hell, i’m still terrified, but that’s a good thing. i’m ready to take this leap and have a truly life-changing experience, because i know that’s what this will be for me.

to get somewhat into the details: i’ll be serving in panama for 27 months. my main task will be working on environmental ed and conservation initiatives, mostly within schools. i am so, so excited.

i’m not leaving for panama until february, so i’m still working in the meantime. i love my job, but now that i know i’m leaving, it’s been really hard for me to stay concentrated and motivated to work. i think it’s also hard for me to stay focused because while i’m pumped for the PC, i’m still sad to be leaving everything behind.

anyway, that’s enough angst. i want to leave this post on a happy note because that’s what i am. i am truly happy, and can’t wait for this amazing experience. i mean, let’s be real…I’M GOING TO PANAMA!

so, new york was INCREDIBLE. i can’t wait to go back and explore everything we weren’t able to do this time around. even so, we packed in a lot for just being there over the weekend. some highlights:

drank a “captain jack” at the way station, a doctor who bar in brooklyn
chelsea came to visit!
got to see a lot of the city via bus tours, which actually turned out to be awesome
ate at some amazing hole in the wall type places
visited the 9/11 memorial (very sobering)
took a trip on the staten island ferry
walked around central park
ate brunch in complete darkness at dans le noir (never doing that again)
had a surprisingly tranquil morning hanging out in times square
randomly saw matthew broderick exiting a stage door
mastered-ish the subway (although it was sweltering)

also, one of the most exciting parts of the trip happened when we went to see an improv show at the upright citizens brigade. we bought tickets, but had no clue who the comedians would be beforehand. once the show started, out pops AMY FREAKING POEHLER, rachel dratch, and multiple actors/writers from the office, the daily show, and 30 rock. i almost died. it was so amazing and hilarious.

after i got home from new york, i left the next morning for the beach. i had an incredible time relaxing, drinking, and eating with the fam, even though they insisted on taking pictures every five seconds (ahem, jess).

i somehow managed to avoid checking my email (almost) the entire time, so i’m a bit scared to go back to work tomorrow. i was also hoping this vacation would somewhat revitalize me, but, if anything, it made me want to travel more. i’m hoping to maybe go to england in december or march, but maybe i can make it back to new york once the weather cools down some.
